The Next Generation NCLEX (NGN), which started on April 1, 2023, is a big step forward in testing nursing candidates’ clinical judgement by using new types of questions like unfolding case studies, stand-alone clinical judgement items, and seven new item types. The exam adopts a polytomous scoring methodology, enabling partial credit for responses, and maintains its computer-adaptive testing format with a range of 85 to 150 questions completed within five hours. These changes aim to more accurately assess candidates’ ability to apply knowledge in complex clinical scenarios, ensuring readiness for real-world nursing practice.
